2.05 WAIT: Why Am I Talking?
Monday Aug 09, 2021
Monday Aug 09, 2021
Why am I talking?
If only we asked ourselves that question more often.
Maybe if we did, and found there wasn't always a good answer, a lot of conversations would have more positive outcomes.

7.42 Learning from work part 4: Reading and retaining
Sunday Aug 08, 2021
Sunday Aug 08, 2021
A serious amount of targeted development can come from reading, whether from for instance books or articles. The trouble is, we too often read and forget. Why waste many hours reading then a week later remembering only fragments? Take the additional time to read and note in order to have a permanent, correct record of your learning as a tangible permanent record, and to share with others. I also touch on the 'five hour rule'...no-one is so busy that time to read cannot be found!

9.59 Learning from work part 5: Networking
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Are you networking or in truth 'not working' when seeking to learn from others? Do you know how you network best? Is it like me, in a one-to-one situation, in groups, or broader forums? Do you work at maintaining your network, so you don't lose valuable people? Have you got a good balance of giving and taking? Are you re-connecting with 'lost' contacts? In short, are you making the most of this no cost, other than time, way of accelerating your development?

8.31 Learning from work part 3: Videos and podcasts
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Videos and podcasts are potentially rich in learning, they must be targeted carefully, and organised properly to maximise the developmental return from the hours invested.

12.01 Learning from work part 2: Capturing and recording learning
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Real learning that leads to development very often needs thinking time and painfully for many, noting. Why is recording our learning such a problem? We don't leave email addresses, phone numbers or postcodes to our memory, and yet to make any note of learning seems a task too far.
Here I explore my own long term approach to this apparently difficult issue, and suggest alternatives to writing or typing this up!

12.29 Learning from work part 1: Four learning models that help
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Learning isn't just acquiring new knowledge. Learning involves the application of new insights and skills. Unless we use what has been 'learned' it isn't learning at all.
From many more, here are four practical learning models that help guide our development.

10.42 Tenth of ten components of a thinking environment: Diversity
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Nancy Kline says that in a thinking environment, diversity means 'adding quality because of the difference between us'. Here I discuss with Rebecca Norton how thinking quality, when managed well, can seriously enhance thinking, and that 'sameness' in whatever way does the opposite.

9.27 Ninth of ten components of a thinking environment: Place
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
The physical location of any interaction has a significant influence on the quality of thinking possible. I work through with Rebecca Norton how all conversations whether for instance, unanticipated in a corridor, or arranged in an office can be prepared and deliberately staged to encourage high quality thinking.

8.16 Eight component of a thinking environment: Information
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Nancy Kline, within the powerful book 'Time to think' says that this is about giving people to headspace to give a 'full and accurate picture of reality'. This, as I discuss with Rebecca Norton, means we need to prompt, via true interest, the time needed to get beyond initial spoken positions and thoughts.

Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Within a genuine thinking environment feelings and emotions are legitimate, and enhance relations. Here, with Rebecca Norton, I delve into how best to react and manage feelings, as we relate to one another at a deeper, more powerful level.

7.26 Sixth of ten components of a thinking environment: Encouragement
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
I explore with Rebecca Norton how in a thinking environment we should put aside our so-natural tendency to compete for 'speaking time', and focus on our conversation partner, encouraging them to think and speak more, even when we don't get shown that same courtesy.

12.22 Fifth of ten components of a thinking environment: Ease
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
With Rebecca Norton, I explore the significance of genuinely doing what it takes to put others at ease, and helping them relax, finding more scope than is usual to think, and to use that thinking to improve performance. When we remove the felt need to hurry what we say, when we make clear we are interested, and are not just waiting to talk, the quality of thinking and contribution is massively enhanced.

8.12 Fourth of ten components of a thinking environment: Appreciation
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
I discuss with Rebecca Norton how developing a default to show appreciation and not to be perceived as critical helps those we live and work with to find the time and space to think more thoroughly.

8.21 Third of ten components of a thinking environment: Equality
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
With Rebecca Norton I work on how best to treat people as 'thinking peers'. This is not as easy as it may seem, and to do this competently means accepting we may, whether we know or accept it or not, have got into the habit of treating some as more equal than others as far as time to think goes.

10.16 Second of ten components of a thinking environment: Incisive questions
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Incisive questions are those that encourage thinking, not 'just speaking. I discuss with Rebecca Norton what this means in practice, and why it requires a focus on the interests and issues of others that is beyond a lot of us.

7.29 The first of ten components of a thinking environment: Attention
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Nancy Kline, author of 'Time to think' says we should listen with 'interest, respect and fascination. Here I explore with Rebecca Norton just how hard it is to do this, and to give ourselves and others time to think deeply and intensely, leading to more positive relationships, and more productive workplaces.

11.08 Can you coach in a thinking environment?
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Here Rebecca Norton and I explore just how challenging it is for most coaches to genuinely practice in a thinking environment. We work through the difficulties of changing embedded practices, and fighting the urge to 'over-help'.

11.27 How to coach in a thinking environment
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Coaching in a thinking environment involves the conscious and deliberate use of a very specific set of skills. Not every coach can practice in this way, nor would this appeal to all. Where appropriate, the coach that can in particular stop themselves speaking when encouraging the client to think is the best option, is in a truly special, and differentiating space.
